The Comptroller General of Customs, Wale Adeniyi, has reaffirmed his commitment to the growth of sports in Nigeria, pledging strong support for Team Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games following his unveiling as one of the country’s official ambassadors.
The announcement made by the National Sports Commission, is part of a broader strategy to mobilise national backing for the Games by assembling a distinguished team of administrators, former athletes, and key stakeholders.
Adeniyi’s inclusion in the ambassadorial team underscores the increasing collaboration between public institutions and the sports sector, positioning the Nigeria Customs Service as a vital partner in advancing Nigeria’s global sporting ambitions.
The ambassadorial team features experienced sports administrators, including Saleh Ahmadu, Amos Adamu, Patrick Ekeji, Alhassan Yakmut, and Gbenga Elegbeleye, all of whom have previously held leadership roles within the commission. Their collective experience is expected to provide strategic direction and institutional continuity for Nigeria’s participation at the Games.
Also named are accomplished former athletes, including Olympic gold medallist Daniel Igali and Commonwealth champion Blessing Oborodudu, alongside other stakeholders and private-sector representatives. The composition of the team reflects a deliberate effort to combine technical expertise with athlete representation, aimed at fostering inclusivity and performance-driven preparation.
Speaking on the development, the Custom Boss described sports as a powerful instrument for national unity, youth engagement, and international visibility. He stressed the need for a coordinated support system to ensure optimal performance by Nigerian athletes on the global stage.
“The success of Team Nigeria will depend not only on the athletes but on the strength of the support system around them. This ambassadorial initiative is a step in the right direction towards building that collective responsibility,” he said.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to hold in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, will bring together athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete in a range of sports, including athletics, swimming, boxing, cycling, and gymnastics, with full integration of para-sports.
With preparations underway, stakeholders have expressed optimism that the renewed collaboration and strategic planning will enhance Team Nigeria’s performance and reinforce the country’s standing in international sports.
