The Nigerian Army has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media alleging an attack on the residence of the Bishop of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Matthew Kukah, and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral.
In a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 8 Division and Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the Army described the claims as unfounded and urged the public to disregard the report.
The statement clarified that no such incident occurred in Sokoto, stressing that the Bishop, his residence, and the cathedral remain safe and secure.
“The attention of 8 Division Nigerian Army and Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, has been drawn to a misleading social media post falsely reporting an armed attack. We categorically debunk these claims as there was no such attack in Sokoto State,” the statement read.
According to the Army, Bishop Kukah is currently carrying out his Easter obligations without any disruption, contrary to the claims made online.
The military further reassured residents that it remains committed to safeguarding lives and property across its area of responsibility. It added that security agencies are working collaboratively to maintain peace and stability in the state.
The Army noted that robust security measures have been put in place to ensure a peaceful Easter celebration, urging the public to rely on verified information and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports that could incite panic.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which operates across parts of the North-West, continues to intensify efforts to secure communities and prevent any threats to public safety.
