The President of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi, is set to lead a climate advocacy campaign tagged “Walk for a Greener Nigeria” in Abuja on Saturday, May 16, 2026, as part of efforts aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and climate awareness across the country.
The advocacy walk, scheduled to commence from the Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, is expected to attract members of the association, environmental advocates, volunteers, community stakeholders, and members of the public in a collective call for improved environmental consciousness and sustainable living practices.
The initiative forms part of COWA’s broader Green Borders sustainability campaign, designed to encourage grassroots environmental stewardship through advocacy, public participation, and community-based sustainability programmes.
The campaign follows the association’s recent nationwide “1,000 Trees in One Hour” initiative, which mobilised participants across different parts of the country in support of climate action and ecosystem restoration.
Speaking ahead of the exercise, Mrs Adeniyi described environmental sustainability as a collective responsibility that requires active participation from citizens and institutions alike.
She noted that the advocacy walk was aimed at inspiring responsibility, strengthening environmental awareness, and encouraging sustainable actions capable of impacting future generations positively.
According to her, the “Walk for a Greener Nigeria” campaign would also promote cleaner environments, responsible waste management practices, and wider public engagement on climate change and ecological preservation.
“Our vision is to make environmental consciousness a way of life in our communities. Through the Green Borders initiative, we want to inspire local ownership, encourage partnerships, and build a nationwide movement where sustainability is driven not only by policy, but by people,” she stated.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, are expected to participate in the exercise alongside other dignitaries, in a demonstration of institutional support for climate advocacy and environmental sustainability initiatives.
The campaign is also expected to strengthen collaboration among government agencies, environmental groups, communities, and institutional stakeholders, while encouraging women and young people to take active roles in environmental protection and long-term ecological preservation.
Participants are expected to use the platform to amplify calls for greener communities, sustainable environmental practices, and stronger public engagement in tackling climate-related challenges affecting the country.
The planned advocacy walk further underscores COWA’s growing role in community-based environmental mobilisation and public awareness on sustainable development initiatives.
