The Nigerian Judo Team has officially arrived in Nairobi ahead of the highly anticipated 47th African Senior Judo Championships 2026, signaling a defining moment in the nation’s pursuit of continental success and Olympic qualification under the global framework of the International Judo Federation.
The championship, scheduled from April 22 to 26, will feature athletes from 34 nations, with a total of 260 competitors made up of 159 men and 101 women, reinforcing its status as one of the most competitive judo events on the African calendar.
The official weigh-in is set for April 23 at 7:00 PM, while the main competition will take place from April 24 to 25 at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi.
On Day 1, the weigh-in will cover the women’s -48kg, -52kg, -57kg, and -63kg categories, alongside the men’s -60kg, -66kg, and -73kg divisions. This will be followed by the individual draw conducted online in the presence of coaches and team representatives, while the remaining weight categories will compete the following day, including the repechage rounds and semi-finals.
Nigeria’s athletes head into the championship on the back of an intensive two-week training camp, reflecting a deliberate and structured build-up designed to sharpen technical readiness and competitive focus. A major highlight of the preparations was a morale-boosting visit by Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), who reaffirmed full Federal Government support, confirmed that all athlete requests had been approved, conveyed goodwill from NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, and emphasized the championship as a pathway to Olympic qualification. He charged the athletes to remain disciplined and committed, a message that team captain Kehinde Aremu described as a significant morale booster that further strengthened the team’s resolve.
Nigeria enters the competition with a balanced mix of experience and emerging talent, featuring athletes such as Audu Franca (World Ranking: 249, -52kg), Ufot Immaculata (-57kg), Udeze Amara (World Ranking: 237, -63kg), and Ekuta Enku (-63kg), alongside Agbo Michael (World Ranking: 135, -66kg), Aremu Kehinde (World Ranking: 273, -66kg), Aremu Taiwo (World Ranking: 402, -73kg), Cyprian Miracle (-90kg), and Ipalibo Somina (+100kg), a lineup that reflects Nigeria’s ambition not just to participate, but to contend strongly for podium finishes.
In further preparation for the championship, referees and coaches from across Africa participated in a high-level clinic organized under the International Judo Federation, with emphasis placed on updated competition rules, consistency in officiating, and the promotion of athlete safety and fairness. This initiative ensures that the championship will be conducted according to strict international standards, enhancing both its credibility and the overall quality of competition.
The 47th African Senior Judo Championships goes beyond being a continental contest, serving as a vital ranking points event, a pathway for Olympic qualification, and a premier platform for showcasing Africa’s finest judo talents.
