The Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology have pledged to deepen collaboration aimed at strengthening innovation, research and technological development to support Nigeria’s security architecture.
This commitment was made when the Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), received the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Udeh, during a courtesy visit to the Defence Headquarters at Ship House in Abuja.
The meeting focused on building stronger synergy among Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to address pressing national challenges, particularly through the application of science, innovation and indigenous technological solutions within the defence sector.
Speaking during the meeting, Gen. Musa stressed the need for Nigeria to promote self financing innovation and local technological development, noting that the country must prioritise domestic research and production in order to reduce reliance on foreign technologies.
He also drew attention to the critical role of energy in defence operations, revealing that several military barracks across the country are currently grappling with electricity challenges.
The minister therefore called for closer collaboration with agencies under the science and technology ministry, particularly the Energy Commission of Nigeria, to explore sustainable energy solutions capable of providing reliable electricity to military formations and barracks.
According to him, stable power supply remains essential for operational efficiency, improved welfare of military personnel and the effective functioning of defence institutions.

Additionally , he stated that partnerships with relevant energy agencies would enable the defence ministry to develop alternative and sustainable power solutions for barracks and other military facilities.
The defence minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the nation’s science and technology community in areas of research, innovation, capacity building and energy development to enhance national security and support the Armed Forces.
Earlier, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Udeh, who was accompanied by heads of agencies under his ministry, expressed readiness to work closely with the defence sector in line with the ministry’s vision of leveraging technology to solve national challenges.
Among those present were the Director Generals of the National Space Research and Development Agency, the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi and the Energy Commission of Nigeria, who highlighted various technological products and research outputs that could support defence operations.
Both ministers agreed that stronger institutional partnerships would help harness Nigeria’s scientific potential and translate research outcomes into practical solutions that promote national development and strengthen security.
Also in attendance were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, directors from both ministries and other senior officials.
