The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Nigerian Army, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has arrived in the Republic of Liberia to participate in the country’s 69th Armed Forces Day celebration, scheduled for Wednesday the 11 February 2026, following an official invitation by the Armed Forces of Liberia.
Lieutenant General Shaibu was received on arrival by the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, Major General Davidson Forley. As part of the welcome ceremony, the Nigerian Army chief inspected a Guard of Honour mounted by Liberian troops, underscoring the long-standing professional ties and mutual respect between the two militaries.
A statement by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, said the ceremonial reception reflected the high regard in which the Liberian authorities hold the Nigerian Army and highlighted the enduring cooperation between both armed forces.
During the visit, the COAS also paid a courtesy call on the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Liberia, where he was received by the Chargé d’Affaires, Ambassador Rahmat Muhammad.
He commended embassy officials for their role in strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Liberia and in protecting the interests of Nigerians resident in the country.
The statement added, reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to defence diplomacy, enhanced military cooperation and regional security collaboration within the West African sub-region.
Lieutenant General Shaibu’s participation in the Armed Forces Day celebration further demonstrates Nigeria’s resolve to deepen professional solidarity and strategic partnerships with sister African militaries in tackling emerging security challenges.
Lieutenant General Shaibu is expected to deliver an address at the 69th Armed Forces Day celebration, as Liberia marks its military heritage, operational achievements and the contribution of its armed forces to national stability and development.
The COAS previously served as Military Assistant to a former Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia and, in recognition of his contributions to the development of the country’s defence sector, was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, one of Liberia’s highest military honours.
