The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to supporting peacebuilding and stabilisation initiatives in Benue State and across the country, as joint security efforts continue to record encouraging progress.
General Oluyede gave the assurance while receiving the Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, who paid a courtesy visit to him at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Abuja.
Alia congratulated the Defence Chief on his appointment and commended the Armed Forces for their sustained operations aimed at restoring stability in Benue. He noted that the military’s visible presence and commitment have reassured residents, renewed hope, and contributed to significant improvements in the state’s security situation.
The governor pledged the readiness of the Benue State Government to continue partnering with the Defence Headquarters to address security challenges and consolidate peace in affected communities.
He also sought further support for the state’s ongoing initiative encouraging non-state actors to lay down their arms, with particular focus on the Sankera axis covering Katsina-Ala, Zaki Biam and Logo Local Government Areas.
In his response, General Oluyede expressed satisfaction with the relative improvement in security across several parts of Benue, attributing the progress to stronger synergy among security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and the state government.
He stressed that the gains recorded so far demonstrate that lasting peace is achievable when all stakeholders work closely with the Armed Forces.
The CDS disclosed plans to establish a structured interface mechanism between the Armed Forces and Benue State to enhance coordination with local stakeholders and ensure that security achievements are sustained and expanded.
General Oluyede also underscored the importance of non-kinetic strategies, including rehabilitation and livelihood support programmes for affected persons and those reintegrated into society.
He commended Benue State’s disarmament initiative and urged the government to put in place enduring support measures that would make reintegration seamless and discourage any return to criminal activities.
He assured that the Armed Forces of Nigeria would continue to back initiatives aimed at promoting long-term peace, reconciliation and socio-economic recovery in Benue State.
The visit was attended by senior Benue State officials and top military officers at the Defence Headquarters.
