The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to professionalism, combat readiness and improved welfare for personnel as Christians celebrate Christmas 2025 and the nation prepares to usher in the New Year 2026.
In a goodwill message to officers, soldiers, civilian staff and their families, the COAS expressed gratitude to God for His grace upon the nation and commended troops for their resilience and professionalism across all theatres of operation.
He noted that the Christmas season provides an opportunity for reflection, renewal of faith and thanksgiving, while underscoring values of love, sacrifice, compassion, peace and unity as ideals that align with the Army’s ethos.
The Army Chief paid special tribute to personnel deployed in operational areas who are unable to celebrate the festivities with their families, describing their service as a profound sacrifice made in defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity and the safety of citizens. He assured them of the nation’s appreciation for their courage and dedication.
According to him, the Nigerian Army will continue to pursue reforms aimed at strengthening professionalism and combat effectiveness, with emphasis on sound administration, enhanced welfare, recognition of excellence and an efficient reward and sanction system.
He said these efforts are guided by his Command Philosophy to transform the Army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force capable of effectively discharging its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment.
The COAS also acknowledged the vital role of military families, noting that their support and sacrifices provide the backbone for troops’ operational success. He assured that the Army remains committed to improving welfare programmes for families of personnel.
He further expressed appreciation to sister services, security and intelligence agencies, ministries and departments, state governments, traditional rulers, host communities and patriotic Nigerians for their cooperation and support, which he described as critical to achieving the Army’s mandate.
Looking ahead to 2026, the COAS said the Army would intensify efforts to address emerging security threats, consolidate gains recorded across operational theatres, strengthen intelligence capabilities and sustain morale and welfare initiatives. He also honoured fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation, pledging continued support for their families.
The Army Chief thanked the President and Commander-in-Chief for his strategic leadership and consistent support, citing improved funding, enhanced training infrastructure, acquisition of modern equipment and strengthened welfare initiatives as key outcomes.
He concluded by wishing all personnel and their families a Merry Christmas and a peaceful, prosperous New Year 2026.
