The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General O.O. Oluyede, has extended warm Christmas greetings to Nigerians and members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), urging citizens to embrace peace, unity and collective responsibility as the nation celebrates Christmas 2025 and prepares for the New Year 2026.
In a goodwill message to mark the season, General Oluyede described Christmas as a period that embodies love, sacrifice, hope and renewal, noting that it offers an opportunity for sober reflection on shared humanity and national responsibilities. He emphasised the need for sustained commitment to peace, unity and national progress.
The CDS commended Nigerians for their resilience, patriotism and continued support for the Armed Forces despite the country’s security challenges. According to him, the trust and cooperation between the military and the citizenry remain critical to the attainment of lasting peace and security.
He assured the public that the Armed Forces would continue to uphold their constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and democratic institutions.
General Oluyede paid special tribute to frontline troops deployed across various theatres of operation, describing their courage, discipline and professionalism as a true reflection of the finest traditions of the Nigerian military.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made by personnel who remain on duty during the festive season to safeguard national peace and security, noting that the nation owes them a deep debt of gratitude.
Reaffirming the commitment of the military leadership to the welfare of personnel, the CDS said the well-being of officers and soldiers remains a top priority. He highlighted the Military Strategic Philosophy of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, which focuses on strengthening joint operations, improving welfare and ensuring sound administration to enhance operational effectiveness.
He added that efforts are ongoing to improve living and working conditions through better healthcare, accommodation, timely payment of allowances and sustained support for the families of fallen heroes.
The defence chief urged members of the Armed Forces to draw inspiration from the teachings of Christ by upholding peace, love, forgiveness, discipline and selfless service. He also called on them to remain professional and loyal to the Constitution while upholding the core values of honour, integrity and service to the nation.
General Oluyede appealed to Nigerians to use the festive period to promote peace, tolerance and unity across ethnic, religious and cultural divides, stressing that national diversity remains a key strength in building a secure and prosperous country.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his unwavering support to the military, and called for sustained collaboration among sister security agencies to enhance national security.
The CDS concluded by wishing Nigerians a joyful Christmas and a peaceful, prosperous New Year.
