Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Dr. Mohammed Kudu Santuraki, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for bestowing national honours on notable military officers and pro-democracy activists from Northern Nigeria, in recognition of their roles during the June 12 democratic struggle.

Speaking in Abuja, Dr. Santuraki, who is also the Santurakin Nupe and Secretary-General of the Niger-South Senior Stakeholders’ Forum, described the gesture as a bold affirmation of President Tinubu’s commitment to national unity and the preservation of Nigeria’s democratic history.

On June 12, President Tinubu conferred national honours on 84 distinguished Nigerians, including several retired military officers who played crucial roles in the fight for democracy during the turbulent June 12 era.

Dr. Santuraki specifically commended the recognition given to Colonel Abubakar Dangiwa Umar (rtd), who was awarded the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR). He praised Col. Umar’s acceptance speech, which highlighted the sacrifices made by military officers and other stakeholders during the struggle.

According to Santuraki, “Col. Dangiwa Umar’s moving speech reminds us of the quiet courage and moral clarity of officers who risked everything to stand for justice and democracy. Among them, our own Major General M.A. Garba (rtd) stood resolute as Col. Dangiwa’s deputy at the Armoured Corps Centre and School. When others were arrested or silenced, he carried the torch — often at great personal risk — to keep hope alive.”

He added that General Garba’s steadfast commitment was instrumental in sustaining the call for democratic restoration, stressing that history will forever remember his sacrifice and that of others who stood on the side of the people.

Santuraki also paid tribute to the Etsu Nupe, His Royal Highness Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, whom Col. Dangiwa acknowledged as one of the unsung heroes of the June 12 movement. “Today, as a revered traditional ruler, the Etsu Nupe continues to embody the values of peace, justice, and inclusive governance. He is a modern monarch with a compassionate heart and unwavering commitment to national development,” he said.

He further noted that the recognition of these patriots is not just a symbolic gesture, but a necessary step toward healing and national reconciliation. “You are celebrated today not only for your loyalty and patriotism, but for your enduring humility. Your sacrifices helped shape the democratic Nigeria we enjoy today,” he concluded.
