The Nigerian Navy has arrested and handed over a suspected militant collaborator and financier to the Department of State Services (DSS) in Cross River State as part of ongoing efforts to curb militancy and maritime crime in the region.
The suspect, identified as Ubong Clement, was apprehended by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) VICTORY deployed at the Forward Security Outpost on Dayspring Island in Akpabuyo Local Government Area.
Military sources disclosed that the arrest followed intelligence driven operations targeting criminal networks and their support structures operating within the Calabar waterways and surrounding communities.
Preliminary investigations reportedly linked Clement to militant elements active around the Dayspring Island axis, where he allegedly maintained regular contact with members of the group and engaged in activities capable of undermining ongoing security operations.
Investigators further alleged that the suspect had connections with a wanted militant leader, Steven Joseph, popularly known as “Juju,” who has been associated with several criminal activities within the maritime environment.
According to security findings, Clement allegedly played a significant role in the disposal of goods stolen from market boats attacked by militants. The proceeds from the sales were reportedly channelled back to the criminal network, providing financial and logistical support for its operations.
Following the completion of preliminary investigations by naval authorities, the suspect was transferred to the DSS Calabar Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Security sources described the arrest as part of broader efforts by security agencies to dismantle not only militant groups but also the network of financiers, collaborators and informants that sustain their activities.
Naval authorities stressed that disrupting these support systems remains critical to weakening the operational capabilities of criminal groups operating within Nigeria’s coastal and inland waterways.
The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations and strengthening inter-agency collaboration to enhance security across the Calabar waterways and neighbouring riverine communities.
