The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on militancy and criminal activities in Cross River State with the arrest and handover of another suspected militant collaborator to the Department of State Services (DSS) in Calabar.
The suspect, identified as Ubong Clement, was apprehended by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) VICTORY stationed at the Forward Security Outpost on Dayspring Island in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement issued by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the arrest was part of ongoing intelligence driven operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and their support systems operating within the Calabar waterways.
According to the Navy, preliminary investigations revealed that Clement allegedly maintained regular contact with members of militant groups active in the Dayspring Island axis and engaged in activities that undermined security operations in the area.
The investigations further linked the suspect to a notorious militant known as Steven Joseph, popularly called “Juju,” who has reportedly been associated with various criminal activities along the waterways.
The Navy also alleged that Clement served as an intermediary in the disposal of goods stolen from market boats intercepted by militants. Proceeds from the sales were reportedly channelled back to the militant network, providing financial and logistical support for its operations.
Following the completion of preliminary investigations, the suspect was handed over to the DSS for further investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with the law.
The Nigerian Navy said the handover highlights its resolve not only to target militants directly involved in criminal activities but also to dismantle the support networks that sustain them.
The service noted that disrupting local facilitators and collaborators remains critical to degrading the operational capabilities of criminal groups operating within Nigeria’s maritime environment.
Reaffirming its commitment to maritime security, the Navy pledged to sustain intelligence-led operations, strengthen community engagement, and carry out targeted security actions aimed at ensuring lasting peace and stability across the Calabar waterways and neighbouring communities.
