The Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, has urged Nigerian students to take an active role in promoting national security, stressing that safeguarding the nation’s unity is a shared responsibility.
The Minister made the call while addressing students of the Department of Political Science and Diplomacy from Veritas University Abuja during an educational visit to the Ministry of Defence in Abuja.
Speaking to the delegation, Gen. Musa emphasised the importance of vigilance among young Nigerians, noting that students, as future leaders, have a critical role in combating insecurity. He encouraged them to remain observant and report suspicious activities, adding that ensuring peace and stability is not the sole responsibility of government.
“Students have a vital role to play in fighting insecurity. The unity of this country depends on all of us,” he said.
Addressing questions from the students, the Minister highlighted ongoing efforts by the Ministry to bridge technological gaps and enhance both food and human security. He disclosed that the Ministry is collaborating with relevant government bodies to advance innovation while also utilising its land resources to support mechanised agriculture.
On local defence production, Gen. Musa revealed that skilled Nigerian professionals are being integrated into the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria to boost the production of military equipment, including drones. He described local production as a sustainable solution to procurement challenges, particularly in light of global constraints linked to the Iran crisis.
The Minister further advised students to steer clear of cybercrime and instead channel their talents towards innovation and national development. He also advocated broader access to military training, noting that it instils discipline, resilience, and a balanced outlook on life.
“Military training is not punishment; it builds character and expands one’s perspective,” he added.
On international collaboration, Gen. Musa pointed to Nigeria’s partnership with Turkey, noting that the country’s decades of experience in counter-terrorism offers valuable lessons. He said Nigeria aims to leverage Turkey’s technological expertise and strategic approaches in addressing security challenges.
Earlier in his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Richard Pheelangwah, welcomed the 54 students and their lecturer, explaining that the visit was designed to provide practical insights into Nigeria’s defence architecture and career opportunities in strategic studies, intelligence, and national security.
In a response on behalf of the delegation, the group leader described the visit as enlightening, noting that it had deepened the students’ understanding of the Ministry’s role in ensuring national peace, stability, and development.
Senior officials and directors of the Ministry were present at the engagement.
