Nigeria and the United States have formally inaugurated the Defence Institutional Technical Working Groups (DITWGs) in Abuja, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral security cooperation under the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap.
The initiative is aimed at enhancing joint efforts to combat terrorism, address insecurity, and promote stability across Nigeria and the wider region.
Speaking at the inauguration, the head of the United States delegation, Mr. Cate Dave, said the working groups would support strategic planning and bolster institutional capacity, particularly in efforts to deny terrorists safe havens. He underscored the critical link between strong institutions and effective counterterrorism operations.
In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Nigerian delegation leader, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, described the partnership as timely and essential in confronting evolving security threats. He noted that the collaboration would prioritise strengthening the warfighting capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria while improving rapid response mechanisms to restore lasting peace and normalcy.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to achieving practical outcomes through the working groups, emphasising accountability and sustained collaboration as key pillars for enhancing national and regional security.
The inauguration of the DITWGs signals renewed momentum in Nigeria-U.S. defence relations, with both nations poised to deepen cooperation in tackling shared security challenges.
