The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has sensitised management and staff of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on defensive driving and responsible road usage as part of efforts to promote road safety culture and reduce traffic accidents in the country.
The sensitisation programme, held at the ICPC Headquarters in Abuja, focused on safe driving practices, adherence to traffic regulations and the need for responsible conduct on the roads to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
Speaking during the programme, the Secretary to the Commission, Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu, described road safety as a collective responsibility that aligns with the nation’s anti-corruption campaign.
Represented by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Musa Ibrahim Alkali, Oparaodu commended the FRSC for organising the sensitisation exercise, noting that the initiative would equip officers and staff with practical knowledge capable of improving safety consciousness among road users.
He urged participants to take full advantage of the training by paying close attention to the lectures and applying the lessons in their daily activities.
Delivering a paper titled, “Defensive Driving Skill: A Vital Road Safety Approach to Road Traffic Crash Reduction,” the Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer of the FRSC, Ohaeri Osondu, stressed the importance of defensive driving in minimising road crashes and creating a safer driving environment.
According to him, defensive driving enables motorists to remain alert, anticipate possible dangers, improve reaction time and develop safer driving habits.
He added that maintaining safe distances, being conscious of surrounding road conditions and adapting to changing traffic situations are essential measures that can significantly reduce accidents and enhance public safety.
The programme ended with renewed calls for sustained collaboration between the FRSC and ICPC on public safety initiatives, with participants emphasising that integrity on the road is inseparable from integrity in public service.
