The 3rd National Para Games officially got underway in grand style at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, with a vibrant opening ceremony that blended sportsmanship, culture, and national unity in a memorable two-hour spectacle.
The ceremony featured a colourful march past by participating states. Defending champions Bayelsa State led a strong contingent, alongside states such as Cross River, Zamfara, Bauchi, Rivers, Niger, Kano, and Lagos, amongst others all proudly showcasing their presence. A few states, including Abia and Akwa Ibom, were yet to arrive at the time of the ceremony.
In her welcome address, the Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Thecla Opara, warmly received all contingents and emphasized the growing importance of para sports in Nigeria. She highlighted the impressive performance of Nigerian para-athletes at the 2024 Summer Paralympics, where the country secured seven medals, describing it as a testament to the potential and resilience of athletes living with disabilities.
The event was attended by top dignitaries, including representatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, led by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko. Also present were the Director General of the Commission, Bukola Olopade, the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Habu Ahmed Gumel, as well as officials from various national para-sport federations.
Declaring the Games open on behalf of the President, Dikko commended Nigeria’s para-athletes for consistently delivering outstanding performances at international competitions, including the Paralympics, Commonwealth Games, and African championships. He reaffirmed the commitment of the National Sports Commission to supporting para sports development and urged athletes to compete with unity, discipline, and a spirit of excellence beyond just winning medals.
The ceremony concluded with the atmosphere further enlivened by cultural displays and acrobatic performances, reflecting Nigeria’s rich heritage while entertaining athletes and spectators alike. The performances added energy and excitement, setting the tone for what promises to be a highly competitive and inspiring with a shared sense of anticipation among athletes and officials.
Beyond the fanfare, the 3rd National Para Games aim to discover new talents, strengthen Nigeria’s dominance in para sports, and prepare athletes for upcoming continental and global competitions. This year’s edition has already recorded increased participation from states, reflecting growing investment in athletes living with disabilities and a broader push for inclusion.
However, while progress is evident, sports enthusiasts acknowledge the need for greater public engagement, as spectator turnout remains relatively low.
For the athletes, the Games represent more than competition they are a platform for recognition, opportunity, and dreams of representing Nigeria on the international stage. Many expressed excitement and determination to excel, hoping to emerge as the next generation of champions.
As the Games continue in Abuja, the spotlight remains firmly on courage, resilience, and the unifying power of sport.
