The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers implicated in the fatal shooting of a civilian in Effurun, Delta State, in a move aimed at reinforcing accountability and professionalism within the Force.

The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, led to the death of Mr. Mene Ogidi and sparked public concern over the conduct of security personnel. In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, authorities confirmed that decisive disciplinary measures had been taken following an internal review.

According to the statement, the Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu had earlier directed the immediate withdrawal of all officers connected to the incident from the Delta State Command. The officers were subsequently redeployed to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they underwent expedited disciplinary proceedings.

Findings by the Force Disciplinary Committee established that the principal officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman, acted in clear violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations guiding the use of firearms. The committee described his conduct as unlawful and unprofessional, noting that it constituted a grave breach of the duty to protect lives.

Based on the findings, the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other culpable officers. The Inspector-General has approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.

The police leadership further disclosed that upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers would be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over the extrajudicial killing.

Reaffirming the Force’s stance, the IGP stressed that the Nigeria Police maintains zero tolerance for abuse of power and unlawful use of firearms. He warned that any officer found violating established rules would face the full weight of disciplinary and legal action.

The police chief also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging their loss and assuring them that justice would be pursued diligently. He emphasized that the Force remains committed to ensuring that accountability is upheld in a manner that restores and strengthens public confidence.

The Police urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of citizens while maintaining discipline within its ranks.
