The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Nigeria Police Force have renewed their commitment to strengthening collaboration aimed at improving the security of corps members across the country.

This was disclosed when the Director-General of NYSC, Olakunle Nafiu, paid a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by the NYSC Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the visit underscored the need for sustained partnership between both institutions in safeguarding corps members nationwide.

During the meeting, Nafiu congratulated the IGP on his appointment and commended him for the recent inauguration of a special police team, noting that the Police have remained pivotal to the success of NYSC programmes since the scheme’s inception.

The NYSC boss appealed for enhanced security coverage for corps members and officials, both within orientation camps and at their various places of primary assignment.

He also called for the protection of corps members’ properties, including lodges, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

Nafiu further raised the issue of exemption certificates for graduates of the Nigeria Police Academy, noting that the NYSC Act exempts members of the armed forces and paramilitary agencies from national service. He expressed the need for collaboration with the academy’s management to facilitate the issuance of certificates of exemption in line with statutory provisions.

In his response, the IGP assured that the Police would continue to provide adequate security for the scheme, adding that the addresses of corps lodges nationwide are already documented by the Force to enable prompt response when necessary.

Disu described the proposal on exemption certificates for Police Academy graduates as a welcome development and pledged increased cooperation between the Police and the NYSC.

The renewed partnership highlights ongoing efforts by both agencies to ensure the safety of corps members and strengthen institutional collaboration in line with national security priorities.
