The Headquarters Guards Brigade has confirmed the death of a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, who was fatally wounded during an armed robbery incident in Dei-Dei, Abuja.
In a statement issued by Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the tragic occurred in the early hours of April 25, 2026, at Shagari Estate, when troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group responded to a distress call over an ongoing robbery attack.
According to the statement, the troops encountered resistance upon arrival as the fleeing robbers opened fire, leading to a brief but intense exchange of gunfire. During the confrontation, Jamiu was caught in the crossfire and sustained fatal injuries.
Despite efforts by security personnel to secure the area and save lives, the corps member later succumbed to his wounds, casting a pall over the Guards Brigade and the wider community.
The Brigade noted that the situation at the time was fluid and highly volatile, as troops worked to repel the attackers and safeguard residents of the area.
Commander of the Guards Brigade, along with officers and soldiers, expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC, and all those affected by the loss, describing the incident as heartbreaking.
Authorities have since launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, assuring the public that findings will be made available in due course.
The remains of the deceased have been handed over to appropriate civil authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.
Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of lives and property within the Federal Capital Territory, the Guards Brigade stated that it would continue to review its operational procedures to enhance civilian safety while confronting criminal elements.
The public has been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies in ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security.
