The pioneer Chief Executive of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ahmadu Ali (rtd), has reaffirmed the enduring relevance of the Scheme, declaring that it has come to stay as a vital institution in Nigeria’s socio-national development.
Ali made the assertion during a courtesy visit by the incumbent Director-General of the NYSC, Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, at his residence in Abuja.
Reflecting on the over five decades of the Scheme’s existence, the retired colonel noted that the NYSC had continued to earn the trust and admiration of Nigerians through its impactful programmes, nationwide presence, and commitment to fostering unity among the country’s diverse population.
He commended the foresight of former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, whose administration established the NYSC in 1973 as part of post-civil war reconciliation efforts. According to Ali, the initiative remains a visionary and enduring programme with sustained national relevance.
Ali emphasised that the Scheme has significantly contributed to national integration by enabling young graduates to serve in states outside their regions of origin, thereby promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
“The NYSC has given Nigerians the opportunity to experience other parts of the country, places they might never have visited under normal circumstances,” he said, adding that the exposure has helped participants develop resilience, adaptability, and tolerance.
The former NYSC boss also praised successive managers of the Scheme for preserving and advancing the vision of its founding fathers. He expressed satisfaction that what began with scepticism and resistance from some graduates has evolved into a programme now widely embraced with enthusiasm and anticipation.
He pledged continued support and prayers for the sustainability of the Scheme.
In his remarks, Brigadier General Nafiu said the visit was aimed at honouring Ali as the pioneer Chief Executive and acknowledging the solid foundation he laid for the Scheme’s enduring success.
He lauded Ali’s administrative competence and leadership in navigating the early challenges of the NYSC, noting that the Scheme remains indebted to his legacy.
The NYSC, established in 1973, continues to play a central role in promoting national unity and youth development across Nigeria.
