The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and restoring peace across troubled regions, while calling for stronger collaboration with the media to promote national unity and counter misinformation.
The CDS, who was represented at an Easter programme organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, made the call during an address delivered under the theme, “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope, and New Life.”
Speaking at the event, he commended the NUJ for organising a programme that blends faith, patriotism, and professional responsibility, noting that Easter remains a powerful symbol of hope, renewal, and triumph over adversity.
He said the message of Easter, which marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ, holds profound relevance for Nigeria at a time the country is grappling with security and socio-economic challenges.
According to him, “Just as the journey from Calvary to the empty tomb signifies victory after suffering, Nigeria’s current challenges are not insurmountable. With faith, unity, and collective resolve, the nation will overcome.”
The CDS noted that troops of the Armed Forces continue to demonstrate resilience and professionalism in tackling terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and other security threats across the country. He added that ongoing military operations have led to significant improvements in affected communities.
“Today, we are witnessing the gradual return of normalcy in many areas. Schools are reopening, farmers are going back to their lands, businesses are resuming, and displaced persons are rebuilding their lives. These are clear signs of progress and restoration,” he said.
He also paid tribute to fallen military personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing their sacrifices as a reflection of the ultimate sacrifice commemorated during Easter. He assured their families that their loved ones would never be forgotten.
Highlighting the role of the media, the CDS described journalists as critical partners in national security, particularly in an era where information plays a strategic role in shaping public perception.
He urged media practitioners to uphold the highest standards of professionalism by promoting accurate and verified information, discouraging sensationalism, and avoiding narratives that could incite fear or division.
“The media remains a vital ally in peacebuilding. Responsible journalism strengthens public trust, counters misinformation, and fosters national cohesion,” he stated.
The defence chief further stressed that security is a collective responsibility, calling on citizens, community leaders, and religious institutions to support ongoing efforts by providing timely information and promoting peaceful coexistence.
He also urged Nigerians to use the Easter season as an opportunity to embrace reconciliation, compassion, and unity while offering prayers for the Armed Forces and the nation at large.
Looking ahead, he assured that the military would continue to enhance its operational capacity, strengthen inter-agency collaboration, and adopt modern strategies to address evolving security threats.
The CDS expressed optimism that with sustained efforts and collective support, Nigeria would achieve lasting peace, stability, and development.
He extended Easter greetings to members of the NUJ and all Nigerians, wishing them a season filled with grace, hope, and renewed faith in the nation.
