The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has celebrated the retirement of one of its senior officers, Dera Nnadi, marking the end of a distinguished career devoted to national service and institutional development.
The colourful ceremony, held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at the Service Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, brought together members of the NCS management team, senior officers, family members and well-wishers to honour the retiring Deputy Comptroller-General. The occasion was particularly symbolic as the retirement coincided with Nnadi’s 60th birthday, turning the event into both a farewell and a milestone celebration.
Leading the tributes, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, described Nnadi as an exemplary officer whose professionalism, discipline and commitment to duty significantly strengthened the operational efficiency and institutional values of the Service.
Adeniyi said the ceremony provided an opportunity not only to celebrate a successful career but also to appreciate the dedication and sacrifices of officers who devote their lives to safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests and border security.
“Today is a moment of celebration and reflection. It is also an opportunity for us to thank Almighty God for the grace that has sustained our colleague throughout his years of service,” the CGC said.
He further noted that Nnadi’s career reflected the core ideals of the Customs Service, particularly in leadership, revenue generation and trade facilitation. The Customs boss also highlighted his personal and professional relationship with the retiree, saying their bond extended beyond official duties to family ties.
Adeniyi expressed confidence that the retired DCG still possesses the experience and energy to continue contributing to national development, particularly through academic and professional engagements.
Members of the Service’s management team also paid glowing tributes to Nnadi, commending his integrity, leadership qualities and dedication to mentoring younger officers. Those who served under him described him as a dependable leader who consistently provided guidance and support while strengthening the Service’s institutional capacity.
In his response, Nnadi expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General, the management team, officers and men of the Service for their support and cooperation throughout his career.
He described his years in the Customs Service as a fulfilling journey of growth, learning and service to the nation.
The ceremony featured the presentation of awards, gift items and commemorative photographs in honour of the retired senior officer.
