The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to safeguarding the Niger Delta as he undertook a strategic operational visit to Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The visit, part of his ongoing nationwide operational tour of NAF formations and theatres, saw the Air Chief engage personnel of Headquarters Mobility Command and other collocated units, commission key infrastructure projects, and inaugurate a new training institution aimed at enhancing professional capacity within the Service.
According to a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the visit was designed to assess operational readiness, improve personnel welfare, and strengthen critical partnerships necessary for national security.
During a courtesy call on the Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, Air Marshal Aneke underscored the importance of sustained civil military collaboration in maintaining stability in the oil rich region. He described his return to Yenagoa as significant, having previously served as Air Officer Commanding Mobility Command.
“Bayelsa State occupies a strategic place within Nigeria’s security and economic architecture. The Nigerian Air Force remains committed to working closely with the Bayelsa State Government and other stakeholders to ensure the protection of lives, critical national assets and sustained peace across the Niger Delta,” the CAS stated.
In his response, Governor Diri commended the Nigerian Air Force for its pivotal role in protecting vital oil and gas infrastructure and maintaining peace in the region.
He particularly lauded the establishment of a training institution in Yenagoa, noting that it would not only strengthen cooperation between the state government and the Air Force but also create opportunities for capacity development. The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining the partnership in the interest of security and development.
At the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force, Operation DELTA SAFE, the Commander, Rear Admiral O.B.F. Oladipo, received the CAS and praised the NAF for its steadfast operational support.
He highlighted the significant contributions of the Air Component in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and air mobility, which he said have greatly enhanced joint operations aimed at combating economic sabotage and protecting critical national assets across the theatre.
Air Marshal Aneke also paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Erujakpo. He conveyed the heartfelt sympathies of the Nigerian Air Force, describing the deceased as a dedicated public servant whose contributions to governance and development would be remembered. He offered prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for the bereaved family.
A major highlight of the visit was the inauguration of the Nigerian Air Force Institute of Administrative Management (NAFIAM) in Yenagoa. The institute is expected to provide specialised training in administration, management, and public relations, thereby strengthening internal capacity within the Service while supporting broader civil–military cooperation initiatives.
The CAS also commissioned the residence of the Air Officer Commanding Mobility Command and performed the groundbreaking ceremony for additional infrastructure projects within the base. He further toured facilities at Headquarters Mobility Command to evaluate ongoing developments aimed at enhancing operational capability.
Addressing officers, airmen, and airwomen during a durbar, Air Marshal Aneke commended their professionalism and dedication. He described Mobility Command as the logistical backbone of the Nigerian Air Force.
“Mobility Command remains the logistical engine room of the Nigerian Air Force. While fighter units deliver precision strike capability, it is this Command that provides the reach, sustainability and operational depth that enable the Nigerian Air Force to project decisive airpower across the country,” he said.
Earlier, the Air Officer Commanding Mobility Command, Air Vice Marshal Michael Onyebashi, welcomed the CAS and expressed appreciation for his sustained support. He assured that personnel would continue to uphold the highest standards of discipline, professionalism, and operational readiness in the discharge of their responsibilities.
