The Ministry of Defence has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) to enhance the use of space-based technology in national security operations.
The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, stated this in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the agency led by its Director-General, Matthew Adepoju, at the ministry’s headquarters in Ship House, Abuja.
Musa stressed that proactive, intelligence-driven operations remain essential in the fight against terrorism, banditry and trans-border crimes.
He noted that satellite-enabled surveillance, radar imaging and signal analytics could significantly improve situational awareness, help identify criminal routes and hideouts, and provide stronger operational support for troops on the frontline.
The minister also emphasised the need for closer synergy between NASRDA and the Defence Space Administration to ensure seamless integration of space assets into military planning and operations.
Earlier, Adepoju highlighted Nigeria’s existing space capabilities and the agency’s international partnerships. He disclosed that the President had approved the procurement process for additional satellites, including radar systems, aimed at strengthening the country’s national security architecture.
According to him, NASRDA has already developed proposals for enhanced border surveillance and real-time intelligence support designed to improve environmental monitoring and operational effectiveness across security agencies.
Both parties agreed to harmonise their activities, eliminate duplication of mandates and develop a coordinated deployment framework to maximise the use of space technology for national security.
The meeting ended with a shared commitment to accelerate collaboration and leverage space-based innovation to strengthen the nation’s fight against insecurity.
Also present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Richard Pheelangwa, and the Director of the Joint Services Department, Bosede Olaniyi.
