The second edition of the Niger Delta Games officially opened on the 20th, Friday, 2026 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, Edo State, with a grand ceremony which centered on sport, culture, and entertainment.
However, the Nine State contingents have all arrived in succession at the Benson Idahosa University Games Camp, where athletes and coaches camped also, accredited before settling into their hostels.
The 'Big Heart' Delta State and former overall winner was the first to arrive, followed by Bayelsa and Imo States, among others. Besides, its 'Beyond Oil: Harnessing Talent' has the vibe and swag.
Athletics, Weightlifting, Football, Swimming, Basketball, Chess, Boxing, Handball, Scrabble, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Canoeing are among the sporting activities.
According to Chief Itiako Ikpokpo, Chairman of Dunamis-Icon Limited, owners of the Niger Delta Games trademark, expressed confidence in the preparations while acknowledging the need for vigilance.
"We have come far into preparations and while I am hugely satisfied and excited with what we have lined up, you can’t let down your guards at such a crucial time,’ he said after the draw for the ball games.
Meanwhile the athletes, coaches, all dressed in their cultural outfit, smiling and dancing to unforgettable musical performances by Hip-Hop stars that entertained the crowd; also light-up the remarkable evening.
DJ Phyna wide-range of play list, including Patoranking and gospel singer Eben did make the occasion an indelible and overwhelming experience.
More also, there was a broadcast live on Arise Television, African Independent Television (AIT), plus Hundred of Journalists across the Nation covering the moment.
Sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Edo 2026 promises to build on the success of the inaugural Games in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, with a celebration of athletic excellence, cultural pride, and regional unity.
In conclusion, apart from representatives from Aso-Rock (Villa) in Abuja, other Government functionaries like; Senator Monday Okpebholo (Edo) host governor, Bayelsa Sport Commissioner Mr. Daniel Igali, Rivers former Sport Commissioner Mr. Boma Iyaye, DUNAMIS ICON and Consultant Chief Malik Itiakpo Ikpokpo, NDDC representatives present; there was enough food, drinks, souvenirs for everyone.
