The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare of members of the Nigerian Armed Forces and their families, stressing that adequate care and support remain essential to the successful discharge of their constitutional responsibility of securing the nation.
General Musa stated this on Sunday, January 11, 2026, in Abuja during an inter-denominational service held as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
In his vote of thanks, the minister paid glowing tribute to officers and men of the Armed Forces for their dedication and sacrifices, particularly those who lost their lives in the line of duty. He also acknowledged the resilience and support of their families, describing them as vital partners in national security efforts.
“We honour with deep reverence the brave men and women who paid the supreme price in service to our country. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” Musa said.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and sustained commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel, while urging Nigerians to support government efforts to overcome the country’s security challenges, including terrorism, kidnapping and banditry. “Working together, we shall overcome these challenges,” he assured.
Delivering the sermon, the Most Reverend Uche Okafor of the Presbyterian Church, Abuja, anchored his message on 2 Chronicles 32:5–8, with the theme “Gratitude, Encouragement and Spiritual Security.” He praised the Armed Forces for their courage and selflessness, noting that soldiers confront danger when others flee.
He encouraged military personnel not to be discouraged, reminding them that their service to Nigeria is also service to God and humanity. He prayed for divine protection, strength and courage for the Armed Forces, urging them to remain steadfast and fearless in the face of adversity.
Rev. Okafor further expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, assuring that the country would prevail over its enemies. He also advised the military to remain professional, neutral and patriotic as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections.
Dignitaries at the event included the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Mr Richard Pheelangwah; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oloyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu; representatives of the Chiefs of Naval and Air Staff; the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Udieandeye; representatives of the National Assembly, members of the diplomatic corps, heads of ministries and parastatals, senior government officials and members of the media.
