The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has recorded major successes in its ongoing crackdown on gunrunning and the proliferation of illegal firearms across the country.
According to a statement released by the Force, operatives recovered 360 prohibited firearms and 5,952 rounds of live ammunition, while 5,936 suspects were arrested for various offences during recent operations.
Among those arrested are 715 suspected armed robbers, 306 kidnappers, 533 suspects linked to murder and homicide cases, and 149 individuals apprehended for unlawful possession of firearms.
In one operation, officers of the Force Intelligence and Deployment Response Team (FID-IRT) rescued two 10-year-old girls who had been abducted and sold in Plateau State. The police also arrested a suspected gunrunner, Tanfa Binbol, believed to be operating between Taraba and Plateau States. Recovered from him were three AK-47 rifles, five pistols, and one pump-action rifle.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s determination to combat security threats nationwide, assuring citizens that the police will continue to intensify efforts to rid communities of crime and illegal weapons.
