Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending decades of affiliation with the party he helped to establish.
In a resignation letter, Atiku cited irreconcilable differences and a deviation from the party’s founding ideals as reasons for his decision.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect.
"As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision, he stated
He noted that the PDP’s current trajectory no longer aligns with the vision that guided its formation, stressing that the principles on which the party was built have been eroded.
Atiku, who served as Vice President under former President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007, described his political journey within the PDP as a major highlight of his public life. He also ran as the party’s presidential candidate in 2019 and 2023, both times unsuccessfully.
“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life,” he wrote.
While Atiku did not disclose his next political move, his resignation is expected to send ripples across the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku’s exit adds to growing concerns within the PDP over internal divisions and declining unity, especially as prominent members continue to express dissatisfaction with the party’s direction under its current leadership.
As speculations swirl over his future political plans, attention now turns to whether the former Vice President will align with an existing political formation or lead a new movement ahead of the next electoral cycle.
