In a major step towards enhancing the combat capabilities of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, has led a high-level delegation to the United States for a Programme Management Review on the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters.
The strategic meeting, held in San Diego, California, brought together top officials from the US Government and representatives of Bell Textron, manufacturers of the AH-1Z helicopters. The discussions were aimed at fast-tracking the procurement and integration of the advanced platforms into the NAF’s fleet.
Air Marshal Abubakar commended the US Government for its continued strategic partnership, stating that the helicopters would greatly improve the NAF’s operational efficiency and combat readiness. “We are fully committed to ensuring these platforms are delivered in the shortest possible time,” he assured.
As part of the visit, the CAS toured Camp Pendleton, California, where he interacted with the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 (HMLA-367) and Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 (MALS-39), which operate and maintain the AH-1Z helicopters. He also engaged with senior US Marine Corps officers to learn best practices in the operation, sustainment, and logistical support of the aircraft.
“This visit has provided a unique opportunity to gain insights from the United States Marine Corps on how to ensure optimal use and longevity of the AH-1Z platform,” the CAS said.
He reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to deploying all acquired assets responsibly in the fight against terrorism and other security threats, stressing that operations would continue to be guided by internationally accepted rules of engagement.
Air Marshal Abubakar also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support and strategic direction. “The progress made in the AH-1Z acquisition project is a direct reflection of the President’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture,” he stated.
