In a renewed push to curb insecurity in Nigeria’s North Central region, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed additional air assets under Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), intensifying its efforts to combat banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence across the region.

The strategic deployment forms part of broader security operations aimed at restoring peace and supporting ground troops. The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, made this known during a high-level assessment visit on 17 June 2025 to Headquarters Tactical Air Command in Makurdi, Benue State.

During the visit, Air Marshal Abubakar joined other top military leaders including the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, a representative of the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Olusegun Ferreira; and the Commander of OPWS—for a strategic session evaluating the progress of ongoing joint operations.

He noted that the newly deployed platforms have been instrumental in providing real-time intelligence, precision targeting, and close air support to troops on the ground.

"Our aircraft continue to execute surveillance, armed reconnaissance, and precision strike missions with measurable impact, he said.

The CAS further highlighted the success of coordinated operations across Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba States, which have led to the dismantling of multiple militia camps and criminal hideouts.

“These outcomes underscore our commitment to national peace-building efforts and the protection of innocent lives,” he added.

Air Marshal Abubakar reaffirmed the Air Force’s resolve to maintain momentum, stating, “As long as peace is threatened, our commitment remains unwavering. We will continue to operate decisively in synergy with other services to restore peace and stability to the Middle Belt and beyond.”

Meanwhile, the Service Chiefs collectively emphasized the importance of joint operations and inter-agency collaboration. They noted that the unity of purpose among the armed forces remains vital to the success of Operation Whirl Stroke and the broader goal of securing Nigeria’s interior.

The deployment of these additional assets signals a significant escalation in the fight against insecurity in the region, offering renewed hope to communities affected by years of violence.
