The Defence Headquarters has dismissed claims that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, made insensitive remarks regarding the tragic Yelwata attack in Benue State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the military described the report as a deliberate misrepresentation of the CDS's comments, particularly by the National Coalition Against Mass Killings and Impunity (NCAMKI).
“We categorically state that the interpretation and portrayal of the CDS’s comments are misleading and taken out of context. At no point did General Musa blame victims or justify the heinous acts committed by criminal elements in Benue or elsewhere,” the statement read.
According to the Defence Headquarters, the CDS’s remarks were intended to highlight the complex realities in conflict-prone areas and to underscore the methods used by criminal groups to exploit community vulnerabilities.
“His comments were made in good faith and aimed at encouraging vigilance, cooperation with security agencies, and unity among communities in resisting those who threaten national peace and security,” the statement added.
The military expressed disappointment over what it described as an attempt to politicize sensitive security matters, urging advocacy groups to engage responsibly.
“General Musa has consistently shown a deep commitment to protecting all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity or religion, and upholds the principles of professionalism, integrity, and compassion in the discharge of military duties.”
While acknowledging the rights of citizens and groups to express concerns, the Defence Headquarters urged restraint and constructive engagement based on verified facts.
It reaffirmed its commitment to working with communities, civil society organisations, and stakeholders to ensure peace, justice, and national stability.
