As Nigeria prepares for yet another electoral cycle, it is crucial that we, as citizens, are not only aware of our electoral rights but also take proactive steps to protect ourselves and uphold democracy.
Elections are a vital part of our nation’s progress, and while they offer an opportunity for change, they must be approached with awareness, responsibility, and caution.
The Nigerian electoral system is overseen by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which is responsible for organizing and conducting elections, ensuring compliance with electoral laws, and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
With the deteriorating state of Nigeria as a Nation and the experiences garnered in past elections especially the immediate past election you will agree with me that things are not well. And for us not to allow such experience to repeat itself, Nigerians must know and understand their rights, how to defend, exercise it at any given time knowing that we have only one Nigeria no matter what.
As we all know, the Nigerian electoral system is managed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) a body tasked with organizing and conducting elections, ensuring compliance with electoral laws, and safeguarding the integrity of the entire process. However, with the increasing security concerns and painful lessons from previous elections especially the most recent one it is clear that we must do more to ensure peaceful and credible participation.
To avoid a repeat of past mistakes and violence, we must empower ourselves and others with knowledge.
Understanding your electoral rights is not only your civic duty but also your shield against manipulation, intimidation, and disenfranchisement. Remember, we only have one Nigeria let us protect it by doing the right thing.
Your Key Electoral Rights as a Nigerian Citizen:
Right to Vote: If you're 18 years and above and properly registered, you have the constitutional right to vote for candidates of your choice at all levels—local, state, and federal. Your vote is your voice; don’t let anyone silence it.
Right to Contest: As a qualified Nigerian, you have the right to run for public office, provided you meet the requirements set by INEC and the Constitution. Leadership is a responsibility open to all eligible citizens.
Right to Free and Fair Elections: You have the right to participate in an electoral process that is transparent, credible, and free from violence, intimidation, or manipulation.
Right to Access Information: Citizens are entitled to accurate and timely information regarding the electoral process, including details about candidates, voting procedures, party manifestos, and polling units.
