Nigeria has restated its unwavering commitment to global peace and security during the 2025 United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial, reinforcing its active role in international peace operations.
Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, made this known during the High-Level Plenary Pledging Session on the second day of the Ministerial. The statement was conveyed by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Ministry of Defence, Patience Ituke.
Highlighting Nigeria’s contributions to international peacekeeping, the Minister referenced the country’s rotation of the Base Protection Force deployed with the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei, as well as its Formed Police Unit serving under the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia.
He further emphasized Nigeria’s leadership in sub-regional peace initiatives, particularly under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU), citing past and ongoing interventions in countries such as Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau.
Additionally, Badaru announced Nigeria’s renewed pledges to the UN Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System, with five new contributions aimed at boosting the country’s support for global peacekeeping operations.
He concluded by reaffirming Nigeria’s steadfast dedication to promoting peace, stability, and security both within Africa and across the globe.
