Troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS) have intensified security around farmlands in Benue State, arresting two herders for alleged trespass and destruction of crops during a routine patrol in Makurdi.
The incident, which occurred on 20 November 2025, took place during a farm protection patrol by OPWS personnel deployed at Zongo Akiki. The troops intercepted the suspects after they reportedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands belonging to local communities, causing significant crop damage. Their prompt intervention averted further losses and prevented a potential clash between the herders and farmers.
The two suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue, with appropriate legal actions expected to follow.
Reacting to the development, the Force Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, praised the troops for their vigilance and professionalism.
He urged residents to avoid resorting to self-help in moments of dispute, warning that violence or reprisals only deepen tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence.
Major General Gara further called on herders to conduct their activities responsibly and in compliance with the law, stressing that criminal behaviour will not be tolerated.
He reaffirmed OPWS' commitment to protecting farmlands, ensuring the safety of rural communities, and creating an enabling environment for agriculture and other legitimate livelihoods to thrive.
